Competing topological and Kondo insulators on honeycomb lattice
In this system, hybridization between local and itinerant electrons leads to the Kondo insulating behaviors, while a large spin-orbit interaction results in topological insulating phase with linearly (Dirac) dispersed surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry (Fig. 1(d)). On a simple two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with spin-orbit coupling on honeycomb lattice (Fig. 2), we realize theoretically a rich quantum phase diagram with competing topological and Kondo insulating phases. Possible candidates of this new quantum matter include: CeNiSn, SmB6, YbB6.
