Switching behavior of magnetic nanostructures in artificial spinice geometry

Abstract: Water ice has unusual properties where hydrogen ions stay in disordered state even at lowest Temperatures. This is characterized by so called zero point entropy which comes in to play as a result of geometrical frustration which also occurs in magnetic materials such that it does not allow simultaneous minimization of all the magnetic interaction energies. Spin ice systems are such materials which are interesting for studies effect of such geometric frustration in defining unusual magnetic states [1]. 
Recently,
suchsince behavior has been observed in artificially engineered elongated magnetic nanostructures with strong shape anisotropy. 
In this talk, I will discuss our recent interest in these systems. In particular, I will discuss how switching of individual nanostructures can be controlled by introducing defects in the system.
 In the end, I will briefly discuss our interest in 1/f-noise studies of novel materials.
